Happy Pi Day

I’m actually tardy in posting this, Pi Day was two days ago, but better late than never. There is a pie shop in a little town called Veyo that is about 30 miles from here that makes the most delicious pies Robin and I have ever eaten. Oddly enough, the name of the pie shop is Veyo Pies, who knew? Veyo Pies also serves really, really good barbecue. Kind of an odd combination, but it works all to hell.

I discovered Veyo Pies a few years ago when I was training for my first St. George Marathon. The marathon route goes right through the middle of beautiful downtown Veyo and is just past Mile 6 of the course, right before you get to this God-awful steep hill with a 7% grade (for nearly a freakin’ mile). I did a couple training runs on the marathon course and ran past this little place and noticed that there were always a bunch of cars in their parking lot.

When one runs the St. George Marathon you are bussed from the middle of St. George, 26.2 miles up a mountain to the starting line (shocking, huh), where you wait in a big dirt staging area in darkness for 1-3 hours, sitting in dirt next to fires with 6 or 7 thousand other idiots, freezing your ass off. While freezing said ass off I struck up several conversations with other runners and heard over and over that their first indulgence after the race would be a Veyo pie. So, with that information in mind, my better half and I tried a Veyo pie soon after surviving my first race. We have been back for pie many, many times since then and the pie has been outstanding each time. They make about two dozen different types of pie and we have only tried about a third of those, so we still have our work cut out for us to make it through the whole selection.

Slice of Sour Cream Lemon Veyo Pie

The photo above does not do justice to the deliciousness of the pie. You’ll have to trust me. We made the trip on Thursday, Pi Day, which for anyone unfamiliar with this nerd holiday is named as such because the mathematical value of Pi is approximately 3.14 (although the value stretches for an infinite number of decimal places). So yeah, March 14 is Pi Day, and we cannot (and will not) wait for it to roll around again to enjoy some more Veyo pie.

Photographic proof that I didn’t finish last
